CTME Project Team
The Ohio State University CTME team brings together a dynamic group of faculty, graduate students, student researchers, and career mathematics educators with a shared mission of meaningfully integrating computational thinking into mathematics learning experiences. Our current efforts focus on incorporating modeling and hands-on inquiry lessons to give students the opportunity to experience computational thinking as a way of deepening their understanding of what mathematics can do in the world.

Dr. Arnulfo Perez

Dr. Pérez earned a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and taught high school mathematics for three years prior to completing an M.A. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University. He has contributed to multiple projects focused on the teaching and learning of mathematics and the use of reform-based practices in urban settings. His research focuses on algebraic reasoning and the learning of mathematical functions in high school. He uses data from large-scale assessments such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress to explore the relationship between students’ performance on function concepts and factors such as access to technology, attendance, and school course pathways. He is also working with national assessment data to explore the college preparedness of 12th-grade students, particularly those students who are from historically underperforming backgrounds.

Dr. Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department and Faculty-In-Residence in the Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI) at The Ohio State University. He leads the ReRout Lab where high-impact research produces novel systems and diverse expertise that broadens computer science, i.e., research that reaches out. Dr. Stewart’s research has led to fundamental intellectual contributions on the design of cloud computing systems, sustainable computing systems and STEM education.

Robert MacConnell earned a Master of Education in 2002 from The Ohio State University has been teaching high school mathematics in Grove City, Ohio ever since. His passion is in finding nontraditional methods to teach mathematics. This has lead him to work with integrating computer simulations and robotics into his classroom.

Emily Bricker has been teaching Middle School Mathematics for 9 years. She is currently serving as her building level department leader and is an active member of the district curriculum planning committee. In addition to her role in the math department, she organizes the school’s field trip to Washington D.C. each spring and advises the after school STEM club twice a month. She is pursuing her Gifted Endorsement and is always looking for innovative ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. She is particularly interested in the role technology can play in a gifted classroom.

Jeannie Krueger
Role: Middle School Mathematics Teacher
For eleven years, Jeannie has taught mathematics at Pleasant View Middle School, which is located in the South-Western City School District, in Grove city, Ohio. For five years, she taught 7th grade math and then she transitioned to teach Algebra and Pre-Algebra to 8th grade students for the past six years. Jeannie earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Childhood Education (grades 4-9), with concentrations in Mathematics and Language Arts from Ohio Dominican University. Jeannie then earned her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with the use of technology, from Ohio Dominican University, as well. She is currently pursuing a second Master’s Degree in Educational Administration through The Ohio State University. While teaching for eleven years, Jeannie has taught in a variety of math classroom settings, including, inclusion (7th and 8th grade), SIOP (7th and 8th grade), and accelerated Algebra (8th grade). Jeannie has also been involved in many extracurricular activities at PV, such as coaching volleyball and track, advising the yearbook committee and Washington D.C. Trip, and being apart of the SSC (site-steering committee).

Bailey Braaten

Bailey Braaten is currently a doctor student at the Ohio State University, where she is in her third year of the STEM education PhD program. She is a graduate research assistant on the STEM+C NSF funded project, looking at integrating computer science and engineering concepts into algebra classrooms. Bailey received her BS in mechanical engineering from Ohio Northern University and her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from University of Cincinnati. Her research area of interest is creating a more equitable learning environment for underrepresented populations of students in the STEM fields.

Adam is a student in the Ph.D. program in STEM Education. Previously, he taught both middle and high school mathematics. He is interested in how technology and programming can be used to help students increase their mathematical understanding and problem solving skills. He is also interested in the importance of hands-on and interdisciplinary topics in mathematics education; then how this can be the foundation for further mathematical understanding and generalization.

JiHye Lee entered the master’s program in Mathematics Education in 2016. She has been involved in STEM+C project in the spring of 2017. Her research interests include equity, teacher and student noticing, and classroom interactions.

Michael Clark is an undergraduate Computer Science and Engineering major at Ohio State. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in the financial sector as a software and technology analyst. As a research assistant with STEM+C, he helps update and maintain the project’s portal and database information. In an effort to expand the project’s outreach to high school students nationwide, he has also facilitated communication and supplied content to the Department of Education’s Technology Design Team to create a comprehensive and interactive website.

Da Li is a fifth-year doctoral student major in Educational Policy. She has successfully defended her dissertation and will graduate in May 2018. Da Li was born and raised in China. She worked as an assistant professor at Sichuan Normal University in China for two years and also she taught at the Dennis Learning Center at the Ohio State University as an instructor for four years. Da Li’s dissertation examines the relationship between political culture and teacher autonomy. She employed three level hieratically linear model analyses to conduct her data analysis. Angely Herrera Castro is an undergraduate student pursuing Medical Laboratory Science. Angely was exposed to STEM outreach as a volunteer science education assistant at Columbus State Community College. She also served as a research intern at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in 2015, focusing on informal science education. Angely has served as an undergraduate research panelist, and a mentor to underclassmen pursuing a career in the STEM field. She is interested in STEM Education outreach, Latinx outreach, and mentoring.

I am currently a Masters student studying Computer Science at the Ohio State University. I am working as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Arnulfo Perez. My duties include developing and administering the educational portal that seeks to integrate computational thinking with the curriculum of high school students. My research interests span the domains of Computer Architecture, Multicore Computing, Hardware Accelerators for Machine Learning and Web Performance and Analysis. I am presently working on implementing computational sprinting to improve the performance and energy efficiency in browsers. I received my B. Tech in Computer Science from National Institute of Technology, Trichy, India in May 2017. While studying at Trichy, I worked on various academic projects which led to four publications. Apart from research and studies, I make time to play badminton and squash.

I am Manjukumar, pursuing Masters in Computer Science at Ohio State University. I am currently working as a Research Assistant under Dr. Perez for the Stem-Computing Project which aims at enhancing the curriculum for school children by amalgamating computer coding techniques with simple physics and algebraic equations. My roles in this project include developing a sustainable stepper motor which can demonstrate these equations through motion. I also have the responsibility of analyzing the data of students’ learning behavior and improve the tools to maximize the students learning. I have my Bachelors degree in Computer Science and Engineering from R.V. College of Engineering, India. Prior to joining Ohio State, I was working at Samsung for 3 years as a Senior Software Engineer developing power and performance efficient solutions for multimedia modules such as Face Detection and Gesture Recognition.

Ryan Davis

Ryan Davis is a graduate student at the Ohio State University studying STEM Education. She has been a full time high school math teacher for the past five years in southeastern Ohio, where she loves teaching and mentoring teens, as well as coaching volleyball. She completed her undergraduate work in 2012 as a graduate of Ohio University, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Integrated Mathematics Education with a minor in Business Administration, and was also an active member of OUCTM. Ryan enjoys hobbies such as skiing, crossfit, and being part of the STEM+C research team.
